The California dental market, measured
The commercial question: what does the largest state dental market actually look like — not from surveys or extrapolations, but from measured, per-clinic evidence with honest unknowns?
Short answer
California holds 14,704 clinic records (19,673 in-scope locations) on the July 29, 2026 snapshot. 63.3% advertise implants on their own site, 36.4% offer online booking, 2,007 verifiably run Google Ads, and 58 DSO networks operate 1,210 affiliated locations. Every figure below carries its denominator and its unknown count — unknown is never counted as no.

distinct DSO networks detected in the state: 540 affiliated records spanning 1,210 in-state locations (absolute counts; lower bound).
clinics with a first-observed freshness signal in the last 90 days — a floor from NPI enumeration and Maps first-seen, not sweep timing.
of 19,673 in-scope locations are county-assigned once, across 57 of 58 counties — the geographic base the series builds on.
Services mix — what 14,704 clinic sites actually say
Website-derived: a service counts only when the clinic explicitly offers it on its own site (referrals excluded). Three numbers per signal; unknown means no site extraction on record for that clinic.

Not separable in v1: Invisalign / clear aligners are reported inside orthodontics — the stored field does not distinguish them, and we do not invent a split.
Technology & marketing — the differentiated layer
Ad activity is verified per clinic against the platforms' own transparency surfaces: an explicit "no results" is a verified negative; a crashed attempt stays unknown, never "no". No published dataset in our competitor set carries this layer.
| Signal | Detected | Share of 14,704 | Not detected | Unknown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online booking widget | 5,354 | 36.4% | 5,088 | 4,262 |
| Google Ads (verified active) | 2,007 | 13.6% | 8,019 | 4,678 |
| Patient portal | 964 | 6.6% | 9,478 | 4,262 |
| Meta Ads (verified active) | 345 | 2.3% | 5,770 | 8,589 |
| Call tracking | 339 | 2.3% | 10,103 | 4,262 |
Patient-portal detection is keyword-based and prone to under-detection — treat detected as a floor. Not collected in v1 (no detector exists, so no number is claimed): iTero, CEREC / same-day crowns, membership plans.
Reputation: 2,891 clinics lead the state
19.7% of California clinic records hold a 4.7★+ Google rating with 200 or more reviews — the band commercial teams treat as reputation leadership. Bands only, never per clinic; unknown (2,376 for ratings) conflates "no Google profile" with "never checked" and is disclosed as such.
DSO structure — the visible layer, measured
540 clinic records are DSO-affiliated with confidence, spanning 1,210 in-state locations across 58 distinct networks (multi-signal detection: parent links, curated brand registry, shared infrastructure, affiliation events and research signals). These are absolute, deduped counts — branded chains collapse into one record with branches, so record-level counts understate consolidation, and detector recall is unmeasured: treat every figure as a lower bound.
This is the layer that identifies itself. The complementary national layer — unbranded ownership networks detected from evidence — is published separately: Hidden dental networks: the measured layer. The two layers use different methods and denominators and are never blended.

Frequently asked questions
How many dental clinics are there in California?
The DentalCensus universe holds 14,704 California clinic records (organisation-sites) and 19,673 in-scope locations including patient-care branches, as of the July 29, 2026 snapshot. The universe is existence-based — coordinates plus at least one venue confirmation — and the full definition, with ineligible-record breakdown, is in the methodology block.
What share of California dental clinics offer implants?
9,307 of 14,704 clinic records (63.3%) advertise implants on their own website; 4,937 do not; 460 are unknown (no site extraction on record). Website-derived means the clinic says so on its site — unknown is never counted as no.
How many DSO-affiliated dental clinics are in California?
540 clinic records are DSO-affiliated with confidence, spanning 1,210 in-state locations across 58 distinct networks (multi-signal detection; branded chains dedupe into one record with branches, so record-level counts understate consolidation — treat as a lower bound). A further gray-zone queue exists but is an investigation list, not a publishable fact.
How are these numbers measured and refreshed?
Every detection metric is three numbers — detected, not detected, unknown — with its denominator, method and detector version; unknown means no observation from that source family, never "no". Figures come from a fail-closed validated evidence pack (schema state_report.v1, snapshot cutoff July 29, 2026); the page regenerates from the artifact, never by hand-editing.
